JEWS LANE HISTORY QUERY
Where does Jews Lane in Gornal get its name from?
That's the question posed to us recently by Catherine Norris, a regular Yampy reader from New Zealand.
Catherine wonders if perhaps there was once a large Jewish community in Gornal. We think that this is unlikely, and turned to celebrated local historian Trevor Genge for support. Trevor suggests that it might be a corruption of 'Dews', which was once quite a common local family name.
At any rate, the 1901 Gornal & Wrens Nest map we sell at www.blackcountryshop.co.uk shows Jews Lane, so the story of its origin must go back more than a century. If anyone can help, please drop us a line at history@yampy.co.uk.
