CHARLES MITCHELL of ELLOWES

Way back in 2001, one of the first History articles we uploaded to the Yampy Gornal site was an account of Ellowes Hall (click here).

We're always pleased when an old Yampy web page is rescued from obscurity, usually thanks to a search engine enquiry. So we were interested to receive the following recently, from Jill Jennings.

I am the great-granddaughter of Charles Thomas Mitchell, who lived for a time at Ellowes Hall.

My mother remembers my grandad talking about Ellowes and in fact says that the film made there was a big blockbuster. She thinks it was 'Birth Of A Nation' and that my Great Aunt Vera was engaged for a time to the director, a W.D. Griffiths.

When he went back to America, she apparently refused to go with him and so the engagement ended.

On a websearch, we find that the dates don't quite match up. If those facts could be verified and for some reason some scenes of 'Birth Of A Nation' were filmed in England, it might be of some use to you.

I would love to hear any information you might have about my great grandfather. He apparently lost a lot of his fortune trying to keep his men in work.

Do you know anything about him or in fact where he then moved to? It would be most helpful and my mother would be pleased to have any new information on her family.

If you can help, why not drop an email to us at history@yampy.co.uk ?
