Dudley veterans Return Funds Available
Ross Cranston MP has urged local 2nd World War veterans to apply to the Heroes Return Funds
to enable them to visit the countries where they served over the coming 18 months.
Ross said: ‘We have a number of 60th anniversaries relating to 2nd World War events coming up over the next few months.
The Government has established the Heroes Return Fund to enable veterans resident in the UK to travel to the countries
where they served. The Fund is also to encourage veterans to visit and work with schools so new generations
can learn from their experience. I do hope that the veterans in Dudley North will take advantage of this scheme,
not only so they can see their successes of 60 years ago, but also to help the younger generation know what was
involved in a personal way.
‘The Heroes Return Fund will pay for veterans’ travel costs and also that of their carers and concessionary passports
if necessary. The extra £10 million is made available from the Lottery’s New Opportunities Fund.
Funding has already been available via the Lottery, but 2005 and 2005 will be special for many veterans because
of the momentous events of that time.'
The Fund has been developed in partnership with the Government Departments of Defence, Culture Media and Sport
and Education and Skills along with the Imperial War Museum, New Opportunities Fund, Confederation of
British Service and Ex-Service Organisations. Major 60th anniversary dates coming up include:
D-Day 6 June 2004,
Landings Southern France Aug-Sept 2004,
Operation Market Garden Sept 2004,
Burma Campaigns Jan-March 2005,
Capture of Rangoon and Mandalay March 2005,
Rhine Crossing Late March 2005,
VE Day 8 May 2005,
Liberation of Channel Islands 9 May 2005,
VJ Day 15 August 2005,
