Celebrating ATC inauguration

A Gornal-based Air Training Corps Squadron held a very special commemoration service recently.

On the 5th February 1941 the Air Training Corps (ATC) was officially established with King George VI agreeing to be the Air Commodore-in-Chief and issuing a Royal Warrant setting out the Corps’ aims.

To mark this anniversary, a tradition has arisen within the Corps to celebrate the event on the Sunday nearest to the 5th of February.

This year, as in previous years, the cadets of 2132 (Sedgley) Squadron ATV under the command of Flight Lieutenant Ted Kanas took part in a church service held at their parish church of All Saints in Sedgley on Sunday 8th February. The Squadron Padre, Reverend Stephen Buckley, who is also the Vicar at All Saints, held the communion service at 10.30am. with the local parishioners and with the cadets parading the Squadron Colours.

There was an excellent turnout, not only of the cadets but also of uniformed and non-uniformed staff as well as members of the Civilian Committee and cadet’s parents.

After the service everyone was invited to the parish hall for refreshments which were prepared by the ladies of the Civilian Committee.

"All in all a very uplifting and enjoyable morning was had by all present" Ted Kanas told Yampy afterwards. "Many positive comments were made by the parishioners as to the deportment and behaviour of our cadets.
