Local Shops to Benefit from Exclusion Scheme
Dudley Borough’s Business Crime Partnership is to launch a new exclusion notice scheme from 7 May 2004.
The scheme, a joint effort between police and Dudley Council is intended to remove individuals involved in business crime
from the borough. Normally, there is an invitation by retailers for members of the public to enter their premises
and either view, or buy the merchandise on display. The issue of an exclusion notice withdraws that invitation to
the person issued with the notice.
Once a notice is issued it will be in place for 12 months and a review will be carried out after six months by
the business crime partnership. If an offender breaches the exclusion notice then his/her exclusion is automatically
renewed from that date for a further 12 months. Members will have access to a full list of excluded people.
The introduction of exclusion notices should protect staff from physical violence or verbal abuse and will have a
significant impact on reducing the fear of crime.
Councillor Les Jones, Lead Member for Community Safety said:
“For too long known offenders have blighted our local businesses, made nuisances of themselves and caused distress
to both staff and shoppers. This is a very significant step in ensuring local businesses are rid of persistent
criminals and troublemakers. Police and Dudley Council are committed to making the borough of Dudley a safe place
for everyone.”
Sergeant Ian Elliott, Brierley Hill police station said:
“The exclusion scheme is about stopping persistent, known offenders from causing criminal damage in our
business community. By working with members of the business crime partnership, offenders can be easily identified
and their criminal activity ceased.”
To benefit from the exclusion notice scheme, businesses must be members of the business crime partnership.
