Gornal Man Deported from Euro 2004

It's not often that Gornal people and events gain national prominence, but on the rare occasions that we do make the front pages the result never seems to be a positive image of our community.

Over the past couple of years we've had manslaughter and even an earthquake. Now we are in danger of being portrayed as some sort of hotbed of football hooliganism. John Parkes, a 19 year old student from Upper Gornal, is one of eight men who arrived back at Heathrow yesterday after being deported from Portugal following the disturbances in Albufeira on Monday night.

Around 30 police officers met the deportees when they disembarked off the flight from Faro. At Uxbridge Magistrates Court in London their cases were adjourned until 28 July. According to Scotland Yard they had been served with notices under section 21b of the Football Spectators Act as amended by the Football Disorder Act.

As far as our community is concerned, we think that it is important that we do not jump to any conclusions about the alleged incidents until the facts are known. There are conflicting stories about the nature and extent of the actions of those supporters said to be involved and we should not believe everything we read in the gutter press. Nevertheless, wouldn't it be great if - just for once - the name of Gornal was splashed across the front pages for all the right reasons?
