Gornal Cubs 1959
|
Some time ago we published a photograph of Gornal cub scouts on parade forty five years ago.
We asked if anyone knew the smiling lad marching behind Ian Beach and Gary Westood and are grateful to
Dave Greenaway for the following response:
Regarding the photograph of the 1959 St Georges Day parade, the smiling chap behind is none other than myself!
Believe it or not, I am still heavily involved in Scouts, being the Group Scout Leader of 1st Lower Gornal.
Incidentally, we are the longest continually operating Scout Group in the Black Country, having been in continuous
existence since 1922.Others started before us, but folded and re-formed.
At the time of the photograph, we had our Headquarters in a pub - honestly! (The Fiddlers Arms).
We had been there since before the war, and finally left when we moved to our new Headquarters in Cotwall End Road in 1985.
I would be grateful if any of your readers have any stories, photographs or memorabilia of their time in 1st Lower Gornal,
since I am embarking on writing a history of the Group.
My membership of the Group started in 1955, and I would particularly welcome articles from before this time, however any
material would be appreciated.
Dave can be contacted at 301A Himley Road,
Dudley,
West Midlands,
DY3 2PX - telephone number 01384 232757. Alternatively email Yampy and we will pass the messages on.
