Beware 'cowboy' builders
Dudley householders were today warned to be on their guard against cowboy builders after a man was conned out
of £11,000 for work on a flat roof which did not need doing.
Trading Standards officers from Dudley Council have issued the warning following a spate of incidents.
They say a number of people have received knocks on their doors from builders who claim, falsely, that work urgently
needs doing on the roof or ridge tiles.
One Dudley resident had a narrow escape when a builder knocked his door and said his ridge tiles were loose.
The man went up on the roof and proceeded to unnecessarily remove two ridge tiles before offering to carry out repairs
at a cost of £280.
Sensibly the householder refused to have the work done but now faces the prospect of having to pay someone else to put
back the ridge tiles the cowboy removed.
Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for the department of the urban environment, said:
“These cowboys prey on people’s fears and try to con them out of money, sometimes people’s life savings. I cannot emphasise
enough that people should never give work to people knocking on their door, in my experience reputable traders do not need
to get business using these tactics.”
