Bucket Brigade Memories

The Bucket Brigade

Quite a while ago we published a Yampy article (click here for story) about a group of Gornal pals known as 'The Bucket Brigade', who posed just after the First World War for this fascinating photograph, taken outside The Five Ways (Widow's) pub on the Himley Road.

It caused quite a stir, and was of particular interest to our friend Toni Hickman, who saw for the first time an image of her great great (great?) grandfather Happy Tom Hickman (click here). and later sent us a family tree showing various relationships between Gornal Marsh and Hickman families, as well as other noted local surnames (click here).

We're glad that this subject remains of interest to our readers and were delighted to receive a few days ago the following information from one of our more senior Yampy visitors, Nigel Marsh aged 83:

I do not know the origin of the Bucket Club but rememember the pub from my childhood as the publican was my Grandfather.

I was born 18th March 1921 at 10 Prospect Road and my father's name was John Thomas Marsh. My mother's maiden name was Nellie Hale and her father and mother were Benjamin and Sarah Hale. I can remember going to the pub for my Saturday penny Half of which was spent in the shop on the other corner on a "fullbelly" which was very filling.

My name is Nigel Marsh and am now living in Weston-Super-Mare and shall be pleased to hear from any one who remembers me.

By the way I remember George Marsh as he used to help in the pub and, as far as i can remember, lived up the hill near Grosvenor road known locally as 'The Grave Yard'

If you would like to contact Nigel, drop us a line at the email address below and we will put you in touch.
