Inside the Bricklayers Arms

Although we have previously featured the now vanished Bricklayers Arms in Upper Gornal (click here), these two interesting photos kindly submitted by Mike Hammond somehow slipped through the net.

Mike's father Bill Hammond was licensee of the historic pub before it became known as the Pig On The Wall. It was finally demolished in 2002, amid much local protest, in order to make way for a McDonalds restaurant.

The first image is of Bill serving behind his bar, while the other is of a group of regulars. Mike thinks that their names are (left to right): Herbert Green (cobbler from Badger Street?), Tom Upton, Beattie Hammond (Mike's mum), Bill Marsh (partly obscured), Robert George ("Big Bob"), Alf Shaw and Mr Clarke.

Both Mike and Yampy would love to piece together information about other pubs and businesses that once lined the road from the Green Dragon public house up to the Mount Zion Church at Highgate during the early 60's before some of the properties were pulled down for redevelopment. Mike tells us " If I recall correctly the village of Upper Gornal was fairly self sufficient for most day to day requirements - certainly drink and religion!"

In particular, we are still watching out for details about The Royal Oak pub, having found out a little about its neighbour The Lion.

Does this bring back memories? Any information? history@yampy.co.uk. -->
