Rare defeat for Afc
Local Sunday soccer high-flyers AFC Gornal failed to beat their
'bogey' side last week. losing 2 - 1 to Hoobrook Crown.
AFC started lively and went close on a couple of occasions. On 10 minutes Adam Checketts was clean through on goal,
only to be scythed from behind in the 18 yard box - but the ref gave nothing.
A strong wind was a big asset to the home side, bu the two goals conceded were mainly down to defensive
errors. The first came from a corner which should have been cleared twice before it was put in the net, while
the second resulted from a free kick which was delivered deep into our box. Sean flynn called for it and but missed,
and Hoobrook made no mistake from just two 2 yards out.
After the break it was one way traffic, but AFC's only reward was a Dave Jones penalty after Nick Colburn had been
upended.
"If I said that second half they got passed the halfway line twice I wouldn't be far wrong" said Manager
Richard Upton after the game.
"We threw absolutely everything
at them and shots were blocked from every angle, but even if we had fielded twenty two players
I still don't thing we would get anything out of Hoobrook!"
AFC have a vital cup match this sunday (15/2/04),
with a full squad available as Rob Bates (foot infection) and Luke Middleton(personal commitment)
return to action.
