CANNON INDUSTRIES ARCHIVE
..now available for viewing

The records of famous Coseley gas cooker and fire company Cannon Industries are now at Dudley Archives in Mount Pleasant Street, Coseley.

The collection contains information about the Sheldon and Clayton families, who owned Cannon Industries from 1826 up until the mid-20th century. The records include minute books, correspondence, accounts, financial records and more. There is also a rare copperplate engraving of Coseley Hall, along with photographs of the Clayton family.

Those interested in the Clayton family and Coseley Hall will also find items such as family papers, photographs, and correspondence in the collection.

In addition to this, there is information relating to the Coseley area, including title deeds, sale catalogues, leases and associated papers which describe the land and property in the local area of Coseley and Sedgley.

Some of the more interesting items include records of the Coronation of King Edward VIII, which was planned for 12 May 1937, but never took place. Photographs of Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip can also be viewed.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has supported the records, catalogued by project archivist Liz Newman, as part of the ‘Documenting the Workshop of the World’ project, a partnership involving the four Black Country archive services. The aim of the project is so that previously unlisted businesses, across the region, are registered, and can show the important role played by them in the Black Country during the Industrial Revolution and up to the present day.

The collection can be viewed at Dudley Archives and Local History Service, Mount Pleasant Street, Coseley. To make an appointment to view the records call the centre on 01384 812770.
