Early Days at Wallbrook Primary School

Fifty years ago, in April 2004, Wallbrook County Primary School was declared open by Staffordshire Education chief J.A. Robson. The school had in practice been accepting pupils for some six months prior to the official starting date, so celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2003.

Built on sloping wasteland alongside the railway line, early pupils were able to spend their free time watching steam trains on the Great Western line puff past. They remember too a musical school with opportunities to learn to play recorder or violin, and where the children would arrive at Assembly to the sound of a gramophone record as they filed onto the shiny polished floor.

There were just three teachers in those early days; Vera Willetts (later Jeavons), Arthur Edwards and Jack Wylde, plus head teacher Les Clarke and his deputy Roger Gowland.

They were assisted by the caretaker Norman Moore and his team; Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Stevens and Mrs. E. Jeavons. Meanwhile in the kitchen teh staff included Mrs. Breakwell, Mrs. Cooper, Mrs. Caddick, Mrs. Tyler, Mrs. Newry and Mrs. Saunders.

We would love to hear from any Yampy readers who have memories of the school. Also, why not contact us if you are trying to locate a long lost friend? Our sister site in Gornal has had some notable successes in reuniting old pals as far apart as Australia and the U.S.A., so we may be able to help with your search.
